Mentoring, Spiritual Direction and the Enneagram

Spiritual direction is the contemplative practice of accompanying another as he or she awakens to the spiritual in everyday life.  It is the shared intentions and supports for the directee to have a deeper and fuller experience through the ever-changing phases of life.  This is an opportunity to carve out space and time for a cup of tea and a reflective conversation on meaning in your life.

Dale says this of his work with private clients:  "I work with spiritually-oriented people who are trying to experience who they really are and who also want to understand what is really going on.  I believe St. Irenaeus was right:  The glory of God is a human being fully alive."

Dale describes his work as support for the contemporary contemplative.   He offers attentive listening and supportive guidance to those seeking a natural Way of living in balance and equanimity.  He journeys with seekers from all walks of life who wish to be more grounded and present to the fullness of life as it is.  Incorporating Taoist, Zen, Naturalist and other wisdom traditions in his work, Dale is especially helpful to those seeking deeper practice, simplicity, connection to the Origin of Life, attention to integrity and ethics, greater ease in relationships and right livelihood.

Dale has a Master of Arts in Spiritual Traditions & Ethics from Marylhurst University and a Certificate in the Art of Spiritual Direction from Mercy Center for Contemporary Spirituality.  A spiritual director since 1998, he was a founding member of the Interfaith Spiritual Center, one of the first interfaith centers for spiritual direction and education in this country.

Professional certification in applying the Enneagram as a personal and spiritual development resource enhances Dale's work as a mentor and spiritual director.  Many of Dale’s students know that identifying and maintaining awareness of one’s worldview is a jump start to spiritual development and good medicine for the rest of life.

Dale has studied and appreciates the many spiritual paths in life, and finds himself a Taoist practitioner and naturalist, more than anything else.  For six years he taught T'ai Chi Ch'uan Wu Long Form with the permission of his martial arts teacher, author Margy Emerson.  Today, he attends to his own spiritual growth through meetings with his spiritual community, Taoist meditation, zen birdwatching, playing the celtic harp, and other educational adventures and retreats.  Dale appreciates his very simple and sustainable life, which is car-free, mostly carefree, and increasingly less cluttered with unnecessaries.  His partner, cat, compost bin, and time in the natural world are some of his most important life teachers today.

After thoroughly enjoying his naturalist’s training at Wilderness Awareness School, Dale happily completed Nature University to be a volunteer with Metro Parks and Regional Spaces.  He provides education and support at group nature experiences for kindergarteners, first- and second-graders who are fortunate to experience the natural wonders of Smith and Bybee Lakes in North Portland.

Dale has also been initiated into the ManKind Project's New Warrior Training Adventure  -  The ManKind Project

Organizational Training

Dale also provides direction, training and consultation for organizations, particularly nonprofits.  He has a Master of Science Degree in Human Services Administration from Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies and has extensive management experience in the mental health and public health arenas.   Dale is a Certified Professional Enneagram Trainer in the Narrative Tradition through authors Helen Palmer and David Daniels, MD.  His training also includes work with NLP/Enneagram author Tom Condon and Emotional Intelligence/Enneagram author and corporate consultant Mario Sikora.

Dale can be reached through phone at 503-295-4481, or via email at DaleJRhodes@aol.com.

Would you like individual guidance identifying your Enneagram Type?

Identifying the lens through which you see the world can be difficult to do alone.  On-line tests are seldom helpful and can actually keep people searching longer than necessary.

Dale Rhodes has professional certification to offer one-to-one typing interviews to guide you through the process of discovering your type.

The first meeting is a formal interview that assesses your type, and the second interview is scheduled a week or two later to explore what you have discovered about yourself related to type in the interim.  For both sessions, a book and handouts, the total cost is only $175.

Symphony

To live content with small means,
to seek elegance rather than luxury
and refinement rather than fashion,
to be worthy, not respectable,
and wealthy, not rich,
to study hard, think quietly,
talk gently, act frankly,
to listen to stars and birds,
babes and sages, with open heart,
to hear all cheerfully,
do all bravely,
await occasions,
hurry never---
in a word, to let the spiritual,
unbidden and unconscious,
grow up through the common.
This is to be my symphony.

William Ellery Channing (1780-1842)

Lost

Stand still.  The trees ahead and bushes beside you are not lost.  Wherever you are is called Here, and you must treat it as a powerful stranger, must ask permission to know it and be known.

The forest breathes.  Listen.  It answers, I have made this place around you.  If you leave it, you may come back again, saying Here.

No two trees are the same to Raven.  No two branches are the same to Wren.  If what a tree or a bush does is lost on you, you are surely lost.

Stand still.  The forest knows where you are.  You must let it find you.

 -- David Wagoner

Oh, Tao!

Giving to all beings what they require, without claiming to be equitable;
Eternally performing good works, without claiming to be charitable;
Existing before the beginning, without claiming to be venerable;
Embracing and supporting the universe, without claiming to be powerful.
It is in You that I move.

--- Xu You

Summons

Keep me from going to sleep too soon
Or if I go to sleep too soon
Come wake me up.  Come any hour
Of night.  Come whistling up the road.
Stomp on the porch. Bang on the door.
Make me get out of bed and come
And let you in and light a light.
Tell me the northern lights are on
And make me look.  Or tell me clouds
Are doing something to the moon
They never did before, and show me.
See that I see.  Talk to me till
I'm half as wide awake as you
And start to dress wondering why
I ever went to bed at all.
Tell me the walking is superb.
Not only tell me but persuade me.
You know I’m not too hard to persuade.
