an interactive two-book/film exploration session exploring a triad's themes
Discover the universal themes accessible and applicable to us all on the journey. Expand your community of friends who talk type, character development, arts and literature.
The Enneagram is a map to universal inner and outer territories. While we often gravitate to certain regions, we visit them all daily throughout our lives. Join this program to find and experience where the map is leading you; all through an exploration of amazing characters and meaningful themes in great film (and literature). This is a course on The Humanities, using the Enneagram as its foundation and direction. You'll better understand all the types from this course, because everyone is a version of the core triad 9/6/3.
Now in its seventh year, this program explores the universal themes described in the Nine Points of View, explored additionally in a film or book. This is the Nine Types in Depth, using specific characters to enhance our understanding of ourselves and others. The book or movie may exemplify an Enneagram Type's character arc, or it may explore themes that relate to an Enneagram Type's area of attention, motivations and life themes, vice to virtue conversion, or paths to disintegration and development. Because we have all points of view available to us, most participants each month have found something relevant, moving and meaningful to address in their own lives. The map of the Enneagram and good art provides the entry to examining deeper issues and themes.
Home Study: You will get access to educational materials and on the type and the chosen film or book; and you will arrange to read the book and/or view the film on your own (usually easily available in libraries or on streaming sites to which you are already subscribed). A few prepared questions are available for your self-reflection and our group discussions. If you are a reader, novels are preferred when available, but know that only the film is required for this class.
Teaching and Type Panels Tuesdays Jan 10th, Feb 7th, March 7th: Dale will provide a teaching on the type of the month; including music, poetry, video clips of the nine types and consideration of the instincts, wings, connecting points, etc. We will be joined by panelists representing the the type. JUST COME WITH CURIOSITY!
Wisdom Circle and Lively Group Discussions Tuesdays Jan 31st, Feb 28th, March 21st: We have 30 minutes for those who may want to share reflections on the books/films/type-experiences without crosstalk, and afterwards we move into open lively dialogue on triad themes present in books/films. There is plenty of time for reflections, reactions, questions and deeper delving amongst the participants. COME HAVING WATCHED THE MOVIES!

This course assumes general familiarity with the Enneagram system, through experience or reading provided handouts and a type's chapter each month. The Enneagram is first a circle: Class time will also focus on how the literature/film relates to us all, not just to the type of the month. Although handouts can suffice, students might benefit from an Enneagram text to refer to before reading the selection of the month. Recommended but not required:
- Jerome Wagner's Nine Lenses on the World: The Enneagram Perspective
- William Schafer's Roaming Free Inside the Cage: A Daoist Approach to the Enneagram and Spiritual Transformation
- Helen Palmer's The Enneagram in Love and Work
A warm thank you to my teachers who were inspiration and support for these classes specifically,
- Judith Searle author of The Literary Enneagram: Characters from The Inside Out
- Tom Condon, author of The Enneagram Movie and Video Guide
