I’m an Enneagram Type One, so of course I’m interested in change! For me, the Enneagram does more than tell us who we are - it helps us understand the larger story of who we can become and how we can be in healthy relationship with others, our world, and our higher power, however we uniquely define it. I come into the Enneagram as a community organizer, ordained United Methodist minister, and certified professional coach (CPCC) with the Co-active Training Institute. From these perspectives and more, I use the Enneagram to build interconnection, self-understanding, and transformation alongside people who seek to create a more deeply creative, resourceful, and whole world for ourselves and our communities.

Learning about the enneagram years ago transformed my life.  I believe it can transform lives and move us closer to Essence.  But it’s hard work.  We read about solitude, stillness and silence, the five A’s, meditation as paths to spiritual growth.  But I think that’s not enough.  Confronting your shadow, becoming aware of your fixations and blind spots, understanding your instincts and how they affect your life alone and in community – this is hard, hard soul work.  It needs a companion, a guide, a soul-listener.  That’s why I became a spiritual director, and offer that sacred companionship based on deep faith, compassion for each type, and a trust in the possibility of living a life informed by Being In wholeness, fulfillment and peace.

As a college admission consultant, I believe one’s best fits in careers lie at the intersection of their personality, interests, abilities, and values. When students first begin to work with me, they’ve often explored these four areas topically. Conducting Enneagram typing towards the beginning of my work with students sets the bar for the type of deep self-exploration we will do in these areas and likewise, provides early insights into all four that will guide our research of college majors, careers, and learning environments. Values and abilities, soft skills in particular, as indicated by the Enneagram are of marked use as they help the student and me consider what must be present in a learning, social, and work environment in order for the student to experience joy and growth. The information is further useful in helping me understand what inner forces compel each student toward and away from particular careers.

Additionally, the identification of their own, unique soft skills allows students to personalize their college and job applications beyond answering the routine questions asked of them. Applicants can now paint a richer picture of who they are and what they value and in doing so, convey the depth of their self-knowledge.

As a consultant, the Enneagram sets me up for a successful, productive relationship with my students. By guiding students in identifying their inner motivations, go-to coping skills, stress, and growth areas, I am better equipped to navigate students’ responses to the work we do together and the emotional roadblocks that inevitably present in this very personal work. Ultimately, the Enneagram enables me to guide students to their best fits in majors, careers, and colleges while, along the way, helping them build the self-awareness that will help them succeed in the next chapter of their lives.

As a health coach, I assist my clients to integrate sustainable, healthy habits into everyday life. I've been coaching this Whole Person approach since 2015 and see enormous value in bringing the Enneagram into my repertoire as I come alongside people ready for lifestyle change and personal growth. I will also use the Enneagram as a stand-alone tool to help people better understand themselves, their families and others using workshops and one-on-one sessions.

Some of my considerations to enroll in Studio E were based on the assumption that I was going to create a business called Embodied Wellness in Portland.  My business model was to integrate Ayurveda, Yoga, and Enneagram principles to coach individuals to become healthier.  I had beta-tested the process and was excited about the possibilities.  Unfortunately, I was unable to get traction on making contacts in the yoga community, and then COVID-19 hit.  At first I was frustrated; then I was disappointed.  Yet, oddly enough as a Type 3, I didn’t push by creating a new plan.  I just accepted the situation, and focused on how I could integrate these principles into daily practices to embody my own well-being.

Studio E activities helped me sort through life experiences and discover nuances about how I operate in the world.  I always embraced the strengths of being a Type Three, and appreciated my Type Two and Four wings.  Who wouldn’t want to be effective, helpful, and creative?  I did not, however, examine closely the effort to maintain, avoid, or compensate for my Three-ness.  I have a keener understanding of how to observe and catch myself as I spin out by working harder or don’t pay attention to my own or others feelings and desires.   I am learning how to access virtues and values of different Enneagram types to create space for more kindness and compassion.  I adopted a mantra to live by:  Clear thoughts, kind and true words, and compassionate heart.  The mantra is a daily reminder to draw from and appreciate the interdependence of the nine Enneagram types.  This is what I am doing with the Studio E Enneagram training.

Many people want to find a deeper connection to God in their busy, disconnected lives.
I provide a safe space of rest and help people attend to the presence of God in their lives.
People who sit with me have reconnected with God in ways that have invigorated their
heart, body, and soul.

The Enneagram has been a tool for transformation in my own life; helping me to connect to God and the true self he intends for me to be. I want to pass that on to my directees because when we are connected in this way, we find freedom in our relationship with God and with others. I concur with St. Irenaeus who said:  “The glory of God is a human being fully alive.”

Most of us struggle to understand why we do what we do. The Enneagram is not a static personality system that says we are stuck where we are and will never change. It is a transformative tool that helps us to:

1)  Wake up to the lies we tell ourselves about who we think we are (false self)
2)  Face the lies, fears, and fixations that prevent us living life to the fullest, and
3)  Do the inner work to find the true self that God always intended for us to be,
      living and flying FREE!

In addition to incorporating the Enneagram into general spiritual direction, it has also informed me as I companion people through the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius of Loyola. It is not lost on me that the first people to bring Ichazo’s  Enneagram model to the US were a group of Jesuits (who later taught it to Richard Rohr) because Ignatius thought it was very important to pay attention to our emotions, body, and mind as we connect with God. Ignatian spirituality and Enneagram complement each other beautifully.

I am beginning to incorporate it into the leadership and team-building classes I teach. I have taught the Myers-Briggs since 1987, and it has its uses for understanding team dynamics, but I love the Enneagram as a transformative tool.

I don’t recall the first time a client asked me if the way they felt or thought or acted was “normal.” I probably gave an intellectual answer like “normal is the average within certain limits given the culture in which you live.” Not terribly useful. Not at all empathic.   When I learned of the Enneagram, some twenty years ago, I began to see that there was a better answer to that question, am I normal?

It’s a complex answer, and in seeking this answer, you begin a journey of self-awareness starting with what is normal for your particular personality. In this system, there are nine distinct personality types.
The people of each type are organized and motivated in unique ways. When you know your type, you can explore how your attention tends to go, how the way you use your energy focuses your worldview, how you deal with stress and anger, and how you help yourself and get help from others.

We start with a test which will help you narrow the possible types, and then we’ll talk about the results. I may suggest some reading or online videos to help you ultimately home in on your type. Once you know your type, and what is typical for your type, you can be much more compassionate towards yourself, more patient and less judging of yourself. But event better, you begin to get some distance between your automatic responses… you become an observer. A compassionate observer.

My study of the Enneagram has helped me better understand my clients and the ways they can transcend the struggles inherent in each type, and how each style grows within their type.

“Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers you have built within yourself against it.”
Rumi
In working with the Enneagram, my goal is to help folks come to understand and relax the barriers they have built that prevent them from living their most loving and authentic lives. Using a combination of the Enneagram, the creative arts, soul centered psychology, mindfulness, and each person’s own spiritual leanings, we work together to relax and shift the patterns that create suffering, allowing all parts of themselves to be welcomed.  Along with a colleague, I am currently planning a 12 week program which integrates the Enneagram with Self Compassion.  The goals of this program are to help people understand the wiring of their type, and to practice turning towards themselves with kindness and tenderness.   Using a variety of creative arts (structured writing, simple art practices, and action techniques) we will explore spiritual practices for each type and will encourage each participant to create a daily practice that can nourish them and lead to genuine self acceptance.

I have been interested in the Enneagram since 2001 and have attended a number of courses for my own personal growth. I wanted to deepen my understanding of the Enneagram as a professional. This course did not disappoint. Dale offers experienced insight that can not be found in books alone. I highly recommend this course.
---Jennifer Poole, M.A.

This class was such a valuable experience on multiple levels. The learning, the connecting, the community experience, the time invested and the people involved in it. Dale's gifts as a remarkable teacher and fellow traveler. A perfect combination!
---Jane Larson, Psy.D

StudioE definitely took my knowledge of the Enneagram to a higher level. I am confident now that I have a solid foundation in both instincts and types and feel confident about presenting the Enneagram to small groups in church settings. Well worth the investment in time and money!
---Jean Martin

StudioE was a transformative experience both personally and professionally. The knowledge, skills, and inspiration gained went way beyond my expectations. Dale is amazing.
---Laura Conklin, M.A.

My StudioE experience was incredibly "Life Giving" and opened a new chapter in exploring and discovering my core values, natural strengths, challenges, and how I can be more positive and successful in my decision making as I move forward in my life/Work.
