Philosophy & Approach -
I believe, contained within each of us, is the ability to reach our own personal optimum state of health. Effective counseling, coupled with a willingness to look honestly within, can transform our human experiences of confusion, pain, and distress into understanding, personal growth, and acceptance of self and others. I believe earnest self-observation and reflection hold the keys to making meaningful choices and changes in our lives.
Formal Education & Training -
My Master’s program was completed at Oregon State University and I hold a Master’s of Science (MS) in Counseling. I am an Oregon state Licensed Professional Counselor, (LPC), as well as an Oregon licensed school counselor, K-12. I have officially been working in the counseling field since 1994. Through much of my teaching experience, prior to 1994, I enjoyed using a “counseling-approach” in the teaching/learning process. Drawing on a variety of counseling theories, I use an eclectic approach to counseling, primarily Humanistic/skill-based.
Major coursework included human growth and development, emphasis on working with youth/adults in a school setting as well as using group dynamics for personal awareness and growth for both adults and youth. I have additional training in the following areas: John Gottman’s approach to couples counseling, mindfulness as a tool, using Interactive Theater to examine client-relevant issues, training in working with men convicted of domestic violence, as well as extensive training in issues/challenges of substance use/abuse. Prior to moving full-time to Oregon in 1994, I lived in Alaska for 15 years, working for the Department of Education training counselors in career education. Earlier in my career, I lived in Boulder, CO, directing programs for at-risk youth.
In 2006, I was introduced to the Enneagram through a weekend workshop with Dale Rhodes. In this first workshop, Dale explained how the lens through which each of us sees our world, (as laid out in Enneagram teachings), and the decisions, behaviors, and interactions with others that result from our unique world view, determine the quality of our life and relationships. I was immediately fascinated. Since that time, I have studied with Dale yearly, most recently completing two years (120 hours) in “Studio E” training. The depth and richness contained within the Enneagram teachings/typology provides a powerful tool for self-awareness and a conduit for personal growth. My areas of strength include working with young adults, ages 14-25, couples counseling, and helping individuals make sense of the challenges and transitions life continually presents.
