The 9 Types of Men
in Literature, Film & Community
Nine 1st Thursday Eves or 1st Friday Morns: October 2023 thru June 2024 (with an Intro/Orientation just one week prior)
Explore the ways men develop character and values. Experience how all types of men show us how we can be our best man and more fully hu-man. Each type’s focus and dynamics may provide wisdom on what supports or thwarts our own development as men. We may find benefit in being in right measure with our own way and the ways of other healthy men, and then find our way closer to Being our Best Man: In integrity and good humor, like Type 1 Idealists; Resourceful and humble, like Type 2 Connectors; Effective and truthful, like Type 3 Performers; Sensitive to all and authentic, like Type 4 Romantics; Wise in experience and accessible, like Type 5 Observers; Consciously loyal and courageous, like Type 6 Loyalists; Accepting, patient and expansive, like Type 7 Epicures; Vulnerable, strong and magnanimous, like Type 8 Protectors; Empathic, reflective and effective, like Type 9 Mediators.

Deep learning and change happens over time and in continuous community. Discover the universal themes accessible and applicable to us all on the journey of being men. Expand your community of friends who talk type, character development, arts, literature, men and modern masculinity. This is a course on The Humanities and Being a Man, using the Nine Types as its foundation and direction. The Enneagram is a map to universal inner and outer territories. While we often gravitate to certain regions, we visit them all daily throughout our lives. Join this program to find and experience where the map is leading you; all through an exploration of amazing characters and meaningful themes in great film and literature.
These are small group explorations (10 people, 10 times) on themes found amongst the Nine Types, using specific literature and film to enhance our understanding of ourselves and others as men. The book or movie may offer a character who generally exemplifies an Enneagram Type, or it may explore themes that relate to an Enneagram Type's area of attention, motivations and life themes, vice to virtue conversion, or paths to disintegration and development. Because we have all points of view available to us, most participants each month have found something relevant, moving and meaningful to address in their own lives. The map of the Enneagram and good art can help us gain deeper understanding of universal life themes and meaningful existence. Of special interest to this group will be discussions on how our type may help or hinder being our best man, and if other ways of being may be accessible to us more easily as we grow and change.

Self-Preservation at Home in your Nest: On your own, review a provided handout on a specific type and Dale's notes on the novel/film; and arrange to read the chosen book and/or view the chosen film. A few prepared questions are available for your self-reflection and your one-to-one discussions. Having an Enneagram text is helpful too.
One-To-One Connection and Making a Bond: Commit to a call or a meeting with one different member during the month at a time of your choosing to explore your reflections and responses to the class content. A schedule is created for this at the beginning of the term. This is a great interdisciplinary way to expand your understanding of the Nine Points of View in your own life, and it is a way to explore personality and humanities with men from different points of view. Most students say that this ends up being the most meaningful part of the year's experience. Because we connect through one-to-ones, we do only short "check-in" during groups--- and we get right to the content of the group session.
Social Navigating amongst The Flock: At monthly group sessions, Dale provides a short teaching on the type of the month; including music, poetry, video clips. We have 30 minutes for those who wish to share initial reflections without interactive dialogue; we take a short break, and afterwards we move into open dialogue. There is plenty of time for reflections, reactions, questions and deeper delving amongst the participants. All groups occur online and are never recorded. As an added benefit, you are *welcome* to join in any of the general cogender community's Lunch Bunch and Type of the Month Teaching/Panel Night on the 1st Weds October thru June 6.30p-8.00p PT; just ask to be added to the invite list, please!

You use whatever medium keeps you engaged in the class, books or films. No one misses class for not having completed the book or the movie; your presence, listening and especially curiosity are always welcome! This course assumes general familiarity with the Enneagram system and a willingness to learn a little more. Class time will be more focused on how the literature/film relates to us all, not just to the type of the month. Students might have one Enneagram text to refer to before reading the selection of the month. Recommended but not required:

That is part of the beauty of all literature...
You discover that your longings are universal longings,
that you're not lonely and isolated from anyone.
You belong.

"It was over a decade ago that I first discovered the gift of the Enneagram.
Since then I have attended a few additional workshops and evening events that Dale has offered and always found them engaging and insightful. As both a pastor and a psychiatric RN, I have made use of the Enneagram in helping me understand both the people I serve and, more importantly, why I respond to them as I do.
Most recently I took Dale's 9 Types in Literature and Film. This was an excellent means by which to engage with the Enneagram in a new light and was especially helpful in that it allowed those with deep experience and those fairly new to the study a common platform through which to engage.
Dale's management of both the literary material and various viewpoints of the participants was masterful. I would certainly encourage any who have a passion for reading and an interest in knowing themselves and their loved ones to take this program."
