Dale worked in the nonprofit sector in the city of Chicago during undergraduate and graduate schools, providing both direct service and program management in homeless, mental health and public health programs. A trained spiritual director since 1998, he was a founding member of the Interfaith Spiritual Center in Portland, one of the first interfaith centers for spiritual direction and education in this country.
Professional certifications in applying the Enneagram and the MBTI as personal and spiritual development resources enhance Dale’s work as a mentor, spiritual director and teacher. He has studied in programs with Helen Palmer, David Daniels, Russ Hudson, Jerome Wagner, Beatrice Chestnut, Tom Condon, Mario Sikora, Andrea Isaacs, Sandra Maitri and other current leaders in the field of Enneagram Studies. Dale is a Global Partner of the Enneagram Narrative Community and an internship mentor for students certifying as professionals in the narrative tradition.
Dale has studied and appreciates the many spiritual paths in life, and finds himself best described as a Taoist practitioner and naturalist. For six years he taught T’ai Chi Ch’uan Wu Long Form under the guidance of his martial arts teacher, author Margy Emerson. Today he attends to his own spiritual growth through Taoist meditation, zen birdwatching, the study of music and many educational adventures and retreats. Dale appreciates his very simple and sustainable life, which is car-free, mostly carefree, and increasingly less cluttered with unnecessaries. His partner of 12 years, two cats, garden, composting and free time in the natural world are some of his most important life teachers today.
After thoroughly enjoying a survival skills week-long intensive course at Wilderness Awareness School in Duvall WA, Dale then completed the Nature University curriculum to become a volunteer naturalist through Metro Parks and Regional GreenSpaces program. Time in nature is key to a grounded life and, in light of this, just talking about the weather often has more meaning than we realize.
Dale plays the Celtic Harp and has participated in benefit concerts such as "Harpers for the Heifer Foundation," "Harpers for Housing (Pilot Project)" and a concert for the Oysterville Historical Society/Willapa Bay, Wa. He was also a coordinating volunteer for Arts in the (Hoyt) Arboretum Program.
